Miahuatlán

Oaxaca, Mexico · Part of Sierra Sur

The Sierra Sur subregion with the widest wild-agave diversity in Oaxaca. Home to the Karwinskii family — Madrecuixe, Cuixe, Barril, Cirial, Tobasiche — plus Arroqueño and Mexicano. Berta Vásquez, NETA, and much of the premium wild-agave scene originates here.

Style
Karwinskii-family dominant. Semi-cultivated wild agaves, small-scale family palenques, distinctively dry and mineral profiles. San Luis Amatlán is the anchor village.
Signature Agaves

Miahuatlán is the Sierra Sur subregion that most serious wild-agave collectors focus on. Where Santa Catarina Minas is defined by a method (clay pot), Miahuatlán is defined by agave diversity — a landscape that supports the Karwinskii family (Madrecuixe, Cuixe, Barril, Cirial, Tobasiche, Largo) alongside Arroqueño, Mexicano, and other prized varietals in tighter proximity than almost anywhere else in Oaxaca.

The anchor village cluster is San Luis Amatlán and its neighboring hamlets. This is where Berta Vásquez — arguably the most-cited palenquera in the premium US import market — operates, and where the majority of NETA’s bottlings originate. Cinco Sentidos also sources heavily from Miahuatlán.

Miahuatlán palenques are typically small, family-run, and semi-cultivated: producers plant and tend wild-agave varietals at scale that would be uneconomical to fully cultivate but insufficient to leave entirely wild. This produces a middle path — real cultivation labor, but with genetic diversity and wild-terrain growing conditions preserved.

Flavor signature: Miahuatlán wild-agave bottles tend to run dry, mineral, herbal, and long-finishing. The Karwinskii family in particular takes on regional character here that’s difficult to replicate in more valley-floor cultivation.

Producers rooted in Miahuatlán: Berta Vásquez (via Rezpiral and NETA), NETA, Cinco Sentidos partner palenques, several of the maestros in El Jolgorio’s curator network, and a growing set of independent producers reached through smaller US importers.
