Real Minero
Fourth-generation Ángeles Carreño family palenque in Santa Catarina Minas, Oaxaca. Every bottle is clay-pot distilled by hand — the Ángeles family stopped using the CRM 'Mezcal' designation in 2021, so most current US releases ship as Destilado de Agave despite meeting ancestral method criteria.
Palenqueros
- Graciela Ángeles Carreño — Steward (4th generation)
- Edgar Ángeles Carreño — Master distiller (4th generation)
Real Minero is one of the anchor names in ancestral-method mezcal. The Ángeles Carreño family has operated the same palenque in Santa Catarina Minas — the clay-pot village of Oaxaca — for four generations. Every bottle is cooked in an earthen pit, hand-mashed with wooden mallets, wild-yeast fermented, and distilled in wood-fired clay pot stills. Siblings Graciela and Edgar Ángeles Carreño run the palenque today.
In 2021 the family withdrew from CRM certification and stopped using the word “mezcal” on their labels — most current US bottlings ship as Destilado de Agave. Per Graciela Ángeles, quoted in SevenFifty Daily: “The word [mezcal] today doesn’t represent what we do.” Every bottle in the catalog below is clay-pot distilled regardless of the label category.
Not every Real Minero SKU is in continuous US distribution — Skurnik and Old Town Tequila are the most reliable references for current availability.

10 SKUs — 1 ancestral ★Bottles from this producer we've verified in US distribution — each row cites a source. ★ marks true ancestral: the cited source must explicitly state both clay-pot distillation AND wooden-mallet or tahona milling for this specific bottle. Producer-line statements ("our whole line uses X") do not qualify — verification must be per-bottle. Copper-distilled, shredder-milled, or citation-gap bottles are listed but not starred.
