Del Maguey Single Village
The brand that introduced US drinkers to single-village mezcal in the 1990s. Founded by artist Ron Cooper, acquired by Pernod Ricard in 2017. Most of the catalog is copper-pot artesanal — only the Santa Catarina Minas bottlings (Minero, Ibérico, Pechuga) are clay-pot ancestral method.
Del Maguey introduced US drinkers to single-village mezcal when Ron Cooper began importing bottlings from specific Oaxacan palenques in 1995. Each bottle carries the name of the village where it was produced. Pernod Ricard acquired the brand in 2017.
Only the Santa Catarina Minas bottlings are clay-pot ancestral method. Minero (village namesake), Ibérico (pechuga on the Minero base), and the standard Pechuga (also from the Minero palenque) are all distilled in Filipino-style clay pots with bamboo tubing at the Florencio Carlos Sarmiento family palenque. Every other Del Maguey bottling — Vida, Chichicapa, San Luis del Rio, Santo Domingo Albarradas, Tobalá, Tepextate, Wild Papalome, Jabalí, Puebla — is copper-pot artesanal. Wild Papalome specifically is a stainless-pot + clay-condenser hybrid, which is why it’s not starred.

13 SKUs — 1 ancestral ★Bottles from this producer we've verified in US distribution — each row cites a source. ★ marks true ancestral: the cited source must explicitly state both clay-pot distillation AND wooden-mallet or tahona milling for this specific bottle. Producer-line statements ("our whole line uses X") do not qualify — verification must be per-bottle. Copper-distilled, shredder-milled, or citation-gap bottles are listed but not starred.
